Those Ungrateful Saudis

With Bush's imperial fantasy fading into dismal reality, our nation saddled with record debt, an immense trade gap and an American public that has seen through his "What, me worry?" con, the president has bizarrely sought validation through visiting the scene of his foreign policy crimes. Just how bizarre a ploy was summarized in a Wall Street Journal news report predicting, "As President Bush tours the Middle East on his first official visit, he will encounter an Arab public deeply critical of his policies in the region and skeptical that the U.S. means what it says." The WSJ article quotes the editor of a leading newspaper aligned with Lebanon's U.S.-backed government as stating unequivocally: "Democracy in the Middle East is now part of history. Nobody believes Bush anymore. He has turned the Middle East into a big mess, and you can't bring democracy and change with instability."

A big mess! It turns out they hate us not for our success, as Bush once claimed, but for our incompetence, which he has done much to exhibit.

Panorama of 2007

Dec 2, 2007 : The opposition living abroad can come back to Yemen and exercise their political rights through the existing parties, or can start establishing new parties of their own, said President Ali Abdullah Saleh in a speech last Thursday. The comments were made in Aden on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of November 30 Independence Day at the Stadium of May 22. in Aden. Nov 24 24 ministers have handed over their financial disclosures to the National Supreme Anti-Corruption Authority has bringing the total number of top officials who have submitted their disclosures to 94. This number includes deputies, assistant deputies and general managers of all government bodies, who have complied with last October's call from the NSACA, which was in accordance with the law approved by Parliament in July 2006. Nov 21 According to an official report, some 8,255 forcibly retired employees of the Yemeni Interior Ministry and security agencies have seen their situations improved.

Say No To The Vocoder

No matter who becomes President, this election year is sure to bring change in Washington. Both parties are presenting candidates who want to learn from the mistakes of the Bush years and regain America's standing throughout the world. Today, the Hip-Hop community represents an ever expanding range of backgrounds, ethnicities and experiences, so we have a responsibility to combine our vast resources to correct what may be the biggest tragedy of the last several years: the resurgence of the Vocoder.

To be fair, the worst offenders actually use variations on the device like the Sonovox and Autotuner, but all of them are children of this mighty beast. Once an innocent vocal effect to help sing a song of love between a boy and his computer, the Vocoder family has since become a studio trick to cover up the fact that many of today's Pop singers can't actually sing (like, at all).

New fire chief works behind the scenes

Tuesday's check-receiving ceremony was just one more mundane function that public officials the world over are duty-bound to attend. But Fire Chief Don Huber was taking it all in in his usual mild-mannered way.Huber stood in one place near the edge of the fire station's engine room and mostly listened to those who approached him to introduce themselves, talk about some issue or just make small talk — in many ways, just one face among many at the ceremony. The contrast couldn't have been more different from Gary Scott — Huber's predecessor who's now in prison awaiting trial on federal sex charges. Scott was the center of whatever room he was in and would undoubtedly have been making the rounds and pumping hands like any good politician. When it came time for Huber to talk, he began by thanking the Fire Department's benefactor in the same unassuming way that he's presented himself to the community since he applied for the job last fall. After just a few sentences, though, his comments shifted to proposals coming before the Legislature, leaving behind the ostensible reason for the gathering with nary a change in his demeanor. In just a few words, Huber had artfully redirected the focus from a onetime hand-over of a few thousand dollars to more serious long-term proposals that he thinks could save his firefighters' lives.

Canada needs to explore national space policy: Garneau

Canada's first man in space is calling for the federal government to form a national space policy before its "ad hoc" attitude leaves it lagging far behind others carving out their own spots in the sky. Former Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau says now is the time to look at "where space can take Canada."(Fred Chartrand/Canadian Press)

"Space is a frontier which is in the interests of all countries to use properly. And Canada has got to be there and have a presence there," Marc Garneau told CBC-TV's Politics on Thursday.

China, India and Brazil are developing space programs to compete with the United States and Russia, and space is becoming more crowded with satellites, he said.

The former astronaut said Canada needs to decide how important space is for the country's interests on issues such as the environment, security, monitoring natural resources and even connecting Canadians through satellite communications.
