Gadgets High Definition PC Market Estimated at $2 Billion by 2012

The war between high definition formats is still raging and no one is ready to declare a winner yet. Blu-ray is currently outselling HD DVD for the most part, but it's too early to count HD DVD out with strong sales and backing from some major motion picture studios.

Anyone old enough to recall the war between VHS and Betamax at the dawn of the VCR age can't help but draw comparisons with the Blu-ray, HD DVD format war. In war for VCR format supremacy VHS won and relegated Betamax to niche use only. Many feel that today's format war may never see a clear victory of one format over the other, and a recent study gives strength to that argument.

A new study from ABI Research looks at the growing market for high definition drives in the computer market.

Iowa seeks revenue for roads; Officials scramble for answers after gas ...

DES MOINES — To stave off a transportation crisis, lawmakers this spring will attempt to cobble together $200 million to fund road and bridge projects across the state."I think Iowans will support the idea of spending tens of millions of dollars to make sure our infrastructure needs are met," Gov. Chet Culver said in an interview with the Quad-City Times. "But how we come up with the revenue is the question at this point."

Vandals cause misery for allotment holders

Measures are in place to improve security at the Thornton Allotment site.

"For instance, the council has arranged for the fencing to be repaired, and we are discussing a number of measures to help deter intruders.

"Council officers have met a representative of the allotment holders to discuss the problems on the site and these discussions will be ongoing," he added.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Graham Bell said: "The recent incidents have been brought to the attention of neighbourhood officers and the levels of patrolling have been stepped up in an attempt to prevent further offences.

"Criminal damage is a problem which affects many people in the community and offenders will be robustly dealt with.

"Recently we have worked with the allotment holders and other agencies in the area to address the problems of vandalism, which resulted in a security fence being put up, and that partnership work and advice is continuing.

In Aliquippa and other Rust Belt cities, drugs moved in as steel moved ...

ALIQUIPPA — Amid the bleak, run-down brick buildings, drug dealers drive around in shiny SUVs, Cadillacs and convertibles, the sun glinting off their chrome-plated spinning hubs.Drugs and money are exchanged on street corners. Addicts crash in crack houses, some of them right downtown. Gunfights erupt between drug dealers jealously guarding their territory. Rival gangs — the L’s and the G’s — deal the crack that flows into this riverfront town from New Jersey, New York, Detroit and Washington. In Rust Belt cities like Aliquippa, drugs moved in after steel moved out.In 10 of 14 Rust Belt towns in six states surveyed by The Associated Press, all with populations of 30,000 or less, drug-related arrests more than doubled in the past 15 to 20 years, even as the number of residents declined in every community. The closing of the mills and factories in the industrial Midwest and the layoff of thousands of workers created "a niche in the economy for drug dealing," said Rick Matthews, a professor of sociology and criminal justice at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

Foreigners Kidnapped in Afghanistan

Mizell, who was wearing the all-encompassing burqa that many Afghan women wear when she was taken, works on aid projects for the Asian Rural Life Development Foundation. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Huron students divided, administrators interested in uniforms

But the idea is receiving mixed reviews from the people who would actually have to wear them.

"I've never worn a uniform before and I don't want to," said Sam Bunting, a seventh-grader at McCormick Middle School. "I've seen kids who have to wear uniforms to school. They don't look happy at all."

Other students worry uniforms would impede their ability to express themselves.

Science Unraveling The Mystery of Superconductivity

A "perpetual CIRCUIT" on the otherhand would be possible IF the circuit could be made using perfect superconductive materials in a closed-loop. The difference is simple. In a perpetual curcuit there are no external forces that are being dealt with, like there are with a perpetual machine, and assuming the energy stored within the circuit never dissipates (which in a perfect superconductive circuit it would not) and/or is not released to any external medium, it would run for ever. This is simple electronics theory, and anyone who has taken college level electronics has studied and built circuits that could be perpetual IF reasonable superconductivity could be made.In other words, the author is not wrong...theoretically. We can't build superconductive circuits so no one knows for sure. .

Will perfection or Cinderella prevail in Super Bowl?

The Giants made the NFC playoffs as a wild card with a 10-6 record. They have been nearly perfect in one aspect. They have won 10 straight road games -- seven in the regular season and three in the playoffs -- after losing their opener on the road to Dallas.

The Giants have won two Super Bowls -- in the 1986 and 1990 seasons. The 2000 team lost to Baltimore in the Super Bowl.

The Patriots are 12 1/2 -point favorites over the Giants, a team they beat, 38-35, in the last game of the regular season.

The Patriots walked in the Giants' shoes in the 2001 season, when they won the first of their three Super Bowls. The Patriots were 14-point underdogs to the St. Louis Rams, who beat Tennessee in the Super Bowl in the 1999 season.

When the Patriots got the ball deep in their territory late in regulation time, it looked like they would play it safe and hope to win in overtime.
