Hillary Clinton puts her experience first

Why the big deal with Hillary bashing. All the canidates are telling us what we want to hear, but no one is saying very much about the other canidates. I seem to detect some worry in these comments. Why do most of you think a woman can't run our country. We do everything else for you men. You keep reffering to Bill, well he is not running, so why bring up his mistakes. And tell me what president has not made theirs. Some keep it hid better than others. In my opinion electing obama would be like putting a blind dog in a meat house. I really don't think he would know where he was. He does not have the experience to go in and clean up the mess bush has made for our country. I feel at least Hillary knows what is going on and where to start. I think she is quite a woman to have to contend with all the other canidate bashing, and she can hold her own.

Clinton Clobbered in South Carolina, Will Media Blame Race Baiting?

Let's try to speculate on what's going on inside the Clinton camp right now, or the Clinton suite right now. If you look back at the last several primaries and caucuses, Bill Clinton was no question an asset in New Hampshire. Pretty clear he was an asset also in Nevada. It may have backfired here. They may have taken it too far, not playing the race card, but as Jake [Weisberg] suggested, this is just too much for a former president.

Not playing the race card? What campaign has Stephanopoulos been watching the last two weeks?

Over at CBS, although Hillary was Bob Schieffer's guest on "Face the Nation," this race issue was hardly broached.

To be fair, over at NBC, Tim Russert's panel on "Meet the Press" - comprised of Maureen Dowd from the New York Times, Byron York of National Review, and Chuck Todd of NBC News - did a very strong analysis concerning this matter Sunday, and are to be commended.

Return of the Native

When Ashraf was 13, his father was posted back home to Egypt and Ashraf was enrolled in a private language school. A few months later he realized he was miserable in Egypt. He wanted out.

So he moved, all alone, to a small town in New Jersey called Bayonne, a place where most everyone is Polish, and where last names inevitably end with ski. As far as he knew, he was the only Egyptian in town. But Bayonne was a better fit for him than Cairo, and Ashraf quickly called it home. He had his own apartment, cooked his own meals, did his own laundry and managed to keep his nose clean, steering clear of drugs and alcohol despite the lack of parental supervision.

I just didnt have time to get into trouble, he explains. He worked part-time seven days a week, was captain of the varsity soccer team and an A student to boot.

Despite financial turmoil and soaring oil and commodity prices, world growth barely dipped in 2007 and trade grew at 9%, even though trade talks fell apart. Unlike previous expansions, inflation remained more or less under control...In fact, since the mid-1990s, the incomes of the poorest fifth have risen everywhere except, marginally, in Latin America, where they have been affected by the after-shocks of debt crises. In Asia, the real incomes of the poorest fifth rose 4% a year; in Africa, by 2% a year, faster than the rise for other income groups. The number of civil wars continued to rise until about 1990 and then fell precipitately. In total, the death toll in battle fell from over 200,000 a year in the mid-1980s to below 20,000 in the mid-2000s...

And that's just a small sample of the progress described in the piece.

Iraq Massacres

Frosty Wooldridge: Iraq War Based on Fraud Against American People Every American soldier's death in Iraq is based on a lie. Every death did nothing to protect or save America from terrorism. Bush's war created more terrorism. Bush proves the most immoral and unethical president of all time.

Ron Corvus: The Path To Democracy - NOT! (8 comments) The path to democracy is pure BS. I challenge anyone, anywhere, anytime to show me any lawful or constitutional authority which authorizes our government using military force - covert or overt - to "create a path to democracy" and to "nationbuild." There simply is no such thing.

Desmond Tutu, Persona Non Grata

But a transcript of the speech raises questions about that interpretation. In the transcript, published by one of the groups that sponsored the lecture, Tutu is harshly critical of Israel's government and of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States and expresses regret that some Jews in Israel and elsewhere do not identify with the oppression of Palestinians. But Tutu also explicitly talks about Israel's right to exist within secure borders.

The transcript released by Sabeel, a Palestinian ecumenical group, does not show a direct comparison between Israel and Hitler. The mention of Hitler in the speech comes during a section in which Tutu urged the audience not to assume that the status quo lasts forever, and in which he urged those listening to challenge to “Jewish lobby" in the United States.

Flood, feast and famine in Mozambique

We are driving along a pot-holed road in southern Mozambique when we reach a small bridge over the Limpopo. As we cross it, I look down at one of Africa's great watercourses, a river that runs for 1700 kilometres from its source in South Africa.

No more than 30 metres across, the Limpopo lies still, its waters flowing gently through marshlands and reed banks. Around us is a flat yet fertile alluvial plain, a landscape of low grasslands and long horizons broken only by groves of cashew trees and the occasional towering coconut palm.

"Many people and animals came to this bridge during the floods of 2000," one of our passengers, Carolina Chibure, says. "The water didn't quite reach the bridge, and hundreds and hundreds of people crammed together to survive. They lived and cooked and slept on the bridge for many days."

Carolina, 32, is in a unique position to describe the floods, in which 700 people died and half a million were displaced, because she is the public face of that disaster.

Retail round up - The Sunday papers

City analysts are poised to downgrade their profit forecasts for Marks & Spencer following its Christmas trading update on Wednesday. M&S is expected to deliver like-for-like sales growth of up to 3 per cent - but in recent days a number of major banks, including Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse, have cut their forecasts with some fearing like-for-like sales may have fallen. Some analysts even believe that pre-tax profits may now not reach the symbolic 1bn mark this financial year. "It might be touch and go whether they pass the 1bn barrier after all," said Nick Bubb, retail analyst at Pali International. Another leading analyst said: "I'm below consensus at the moment but I wouldn't be surprised if I had to bring the numbers back a bit more." City traders warn that a disappointing update from M&S could trigger further share price falls.
