| Pawlenty rides the Straight Talk Express
Clawson, Mich. — Gov. Tim Pawlenty continues to campaign in Michigan today on behalf of presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain. Gov. Pawlenty is spending the weekend with the Arizona senator trying to encourage voters to back McCain when they vote in that state's primary on Tuesday. Gov. Pawlenty rode McCain's so-called Straight Talk Express as it crisscrossed the Detroit suburbs Saturday. At both townhall meetings, Pawlenty's job was to introduce McCain. "Thank you very much. I'd say Oakland County rocks. Thanks for coming out for Senator McCain," Pawlenty told the crowd. .
Finksburg man killed in his workplace
Police in Carroll County are trying to figure out who murdered a man at his workplace in Finksburg Saturday night. When Gary Hatfield didn't return home at his usual time, his family grew worried and went to check on him. Hatfield worked at the H and D Movie Sales shop, a store that buys and sells videotapes, located in a strip center on the 2000 block of Suffolk Road. When the family arrived, they found their loved one, lying on the floor in the back of the store. They immediately called 911. When police arrived, they determined that 54-year-old Hatfield had passed away. They are now investigating his death as a possible homicide. Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit say they saw on Hatfield's body what appeared to be new injuries. Could Amtrak service through southern Idaho return?
The Pioneer route between Salt Lake City and Seattle through southern Idaho was discontinued in 1997 after losing $20 million the previous year.Although Amtrak has never returned a discontinued route to service, Don Saunders, Amtrak's vice president for state and commuter partnerships, says passenger rail expansion is more likely now than it has been for 20 year.U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson says legislation will soon be presented in the U.S. House of Representatives to bring back the Pioneer.Simpson says the House version calls for resurrection of the route, rather than to simply study the route as called for in a version approved by the U.S. Senate last year.Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo says he would prefer legislation to bring back the Pioneer, rather than a feasibility study of the route. But other Idaho politicians, including retiring Sen.
Queen of a media empire
America's most exciting election in decades has focused even more attention than usual on the foreign-born billionaire who has made himself into this country's premier media mogul: Rupert Murdoch. How Murdoch will use his vast holdings, which now include the grand old Wall Street Journal, to cover – and maybe even shape – the election is a question of huge import for anyone with an interest in the media, or politics, or both. For obvious, competitive reasons, it is something I am very interested in too. But in our fascination with old-style press barons, of whom Murdoch is surely the boldest manifestation, I wonder if we are underrating the rise of a new type of media tycoon. I'm not thinking of the internet guys – the Brins and Zuckerbergs of our age have had a revolutionary impact on the way we create and consume information, but, so far, they have steered clear of producing much content themselves.
Round-up: Narrow win keeps Gloucester top
But there was good news for England head coach Brian Ashton ahead of next Saturday's RBS Six Nations opener against Wales at Twickenham. Vickery and seven of his England training squad colleagues all appeared to emerge unscathed from a punishing contest, allowing Ashton to breathe easily. Gloucester's victory cemented their place at the Premiership summit, yet Wasps almost pulled off a thrilling triumph. Trailing 18-3 to six Ryan Lamb penalties, there appeared no way back for the Londoners. Desperately needing points to lift them away from a lowly eighth place, converted tries by substitute hooker James Buckland and centre Dominic Waldouck left Gloucester hanging on. In the end though, Gloucester had just enough know-how and experience to deny Wasps, who left the West country with the scant consolation of a losing bonus point.
