Mr. Dan will be missed at Brewton YMCA

Recently, the retirement from the Brewton Area YMCA of Mr. Dan Shaddock was announced.

I had the privilege of working for and with Mr. Dan at the YMCA for almost a total of three years. I first worked for him from December of 2002 to August of 2005 before I had to leave and go to Troy for college.

After graduation from Troy in May of 2007, I moved back to Brewton and got married in June.

After the wedding, Mr. Dan was gracious enough to hire me back at the Y until I could find a fulltime job. He did not have to help me at all, but he found something for me to do while I needed work and I thank him for that.

I started back at the Y around June of 2007 helping him get the Y's capital campaign going. The capital campaign was a fundraiser to help generate money for some upgrades at the Y.

This time, Strahan hopes to be a Super savor

Barber said Tuesday on his Sirius satellite radio show that he truly has no regrets, even with his old team getting to Super Bowl XLII in the first year after his retirement. Strahan felt a bit differently.

"If I'd quit and we got to the Super Bowl and won? Oh, I'm coming back here and holding somebody hostage until I get a ring," he said. "I understand Tiki made his decision. It's just unfortunate timing."

Strahan has had his go-rounds with various members of the media as well as teammates. He and Barber mixed it up during Strahan's contract negotiations several years ago, and Strahan had run-ins with Coughlin and first-year general manager Jerry Reese.

The way this season began, it seemed as if Strahan might go out on a low note if this turned out to be his final season.

99X's demise means loss of unique Atlanta lifestyle

Less than three weeks ago, my son David put a 99X sticker on his car.

Little did we know that the radio station that we had known and loved since 1992 would disappear from Atlanta's airwaves before the month was over. Friday was 99X's last day on the FM dial.

Renew those resolutions

FranklinCovey 's third annual New Year 's Resolutions Survey found that 35 percent of respondents break their resolutions by the end of January and only 23 percent never break them.

The stats are against us, but Madison-area experts are with us, rooting us on here with baby steps to change our lives whether we 've resolved to focus on the environment, education or our physical or financial health. Here we 're offering suggestions for those who vowed to go green, act like a grown-up financially, learn something new, and stick to those diet and fitness goals.

Go green

1. Food from most grocery stores has a lot of miles on it (around 1,500 miles from source to consumer, with various stops along the way) and may be overpackaged to protect it in transit.
