Q&A with Eric Hipple about depression

On Feb. 4 former Detroit Lions quarterback and current University of Michigan Depression Center outreach coordinator Eric Hipple will visit Alpena to discuss mental illness and suicide. In 2000, Hipple's son committed suicide. He now speaks to parents and students about depression and suicide. The following is a Q&A with Hipple. ? How did you go from quarterback to outreach coordinator? “It started with the loss of my son. When that happened, it kind of came out of the blue, even though he had some problems we didn't know what the questions were and what the answers were. I really struggled and went downhill and I crashed ... There was a process that I went through, I went to a dinner and a doctor handed me his card ... I went to a luncheon with doctors talking about depression, and I was like ‘What, what is this, I didn't even know about this' ...

State of the Bengals

Approval ratings: Very low and falling fast. Perhaps spurred by anger over a 7-9 effort this season, three times as many people took the Bengals survey as took the next-most popular survey. The state of the franchise among fans, and arguably within the organization, is in disarray.

Surveys taken: 3,910

What the polls say: Sixty-one percent of fans said the franchise is worse off than it was 2-3 years ago, versus 14 percent who said it was better. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest, a whopping 27 percent gave the current state of the franchise a 1, and more than half gave it a 3 or below. Coach Marvin Lewis received more negative responses than positive across the board, with most of the criticism for his skills as a tactician and motivator (nearly a quarter of survey-takers rated him a 1 in both categories).

Gift card scams rile industry

The guy trying to unload his Cold Stone Creamery gift card on eBay because he says he's lactose intolerant might be a scam artist.

Gift cards are more popular than ever, and this time of year websites are flooded with sellers hoping to unload unwanted cards, often at significant discounts.

Some experts recommend that shoppers avoid such sites entirely. But one gift card selling-and-trading site -- PlasticJungle.com based in Clovis, Calif. -- is striving to overcome security issues, and its founder says the company has addressed every major concern.

About 60 percent of shoppers in a recent survey said they planned to buy gift cards this year, according to the National Retail Federation. And while shoppers can buy the cards in stores and from retailers' websites, a growing secondary market has popped up, fueled by people stuck with gift cards they don't want.
