Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Secrets of Steve Jobs the showman Posted in: General Apple Carmine Gallo does a good job of deconstructing Steve Jobs' recent Macworld Expo keynote performance. He comes up with ten suggestions that can help anyone create a reality distortion field, but without Steve Jobs' charisma and genius for developing products it will still fall short of the master. Following are two items from Carmine's BusinessWeek post: 4. Make numbers meaningful. When Jobs announced that Apple had sold 4 million iPhones to date, he didn't simply leave the number out of context. Instead, he put it in perspective by adding, "That's 20,000 iPhones every day, on average." Jobs went on to say, "What does that mean to the overall market?" Jobs detailed the breakdown of the U.S smartphone market and Apple's share of it to demonstrate just how impressive the number actually is.
GOP candidates tout economic skills
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Republican Mitt Romney described his business expertise on Friday as the best antidote for the nation's economic ills and taunted rival John McCain after he suggested his Senate chairmanship was equal to private-sector experience. "There's an arrogance that sets into Washington, that somehow they know everything, that people in Washington know better than the people of America," Romney said of his rival amid their neck-and-neck Florida GOP presidential primary campaign. Mocking McCain's "straight-talk" slogan, he added: "Now he's engaging in 'Washington talk.' Washington talk says that somehow, because you've been in Washington, and you've been on a committee, that you somehow know about how the jobs of this country have been created." .
Fishermen question small role in oil spill cleanup
Some groups have raised the question of whether the state should continue to rely solely on nine private oil-spill-response organizations whose equipment and manpower are controlled by the oil industry and shipping companies. "We need to have an 'all hands on deck' policy for San Francisco Bay. In this case there was equipment, but it took quite a while to get out to the site. The right amount of equipment didn't go out there fast enough," said Linda Sheehan, executive director of the California Coastkeeper Alliance, who also sits on the Technical Advisory Committee for the state Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR). Since OSPR and the governor have ultimate responsibility for oil-spill response under the law, Sheehan would like to see less overt reliance on private companies by the federal and state agencies.
Lessons our children learn too early
We are with family in Orange County. Can we have our mail forwarded temporarily to another address at reduced or no cost? (there is a service but it is costly and you have to go to the local station which in our case is evacuated) Rudy wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:29 AM:Is La Cresta / Santa Rosa Plateau in danger? 5 families vow to fight possibility of eviction
A group of mothers facing possible eviction from Charleston public housing shuddered at a frightening image: 25 children lined up outside a homeless shelter. That could happen, they said, if a hearing officer with the Charleston Housing Authority decides that it's best to evict five families from the Gadsden Green housing complex because teenage sons from each family have been charged in an October armed robbery. Between them, the single mothers heading the families have at least 25 children. .

Fox News decided to exclude Ron Paul from their Republican debate/forum on Sunday ... despite the fact that Ron Paul won 10% in Iowa, over Guiliani, who had 4%. Fox cited that they picked candidates who were polling higher than 10% nationally (read: Candidates that polled higher than Ron Paul) even though Paul is higher than Guiliani. Fox News' behaviour outraged even people who did not favour Paul, as we all know every candidate should be given equal opportunity. If Ron Paul is 'kooky' or 'fringe' like mainstream says he is, why do they have such an active interest in suppressing what he says? Why do they keep pulling online polls when Paul wins them? Do you think they would pull these polls if Rudy Mc/Romney had won them? Not a chance. Even Jay Leno was shocked at Fox's behaviour.
