| Three weeks until it begins anew
I would like to see us pick up Brian Fuentes from the Rockies. I know that there has been discussions about trading for him, (mainly Chuck James straight up) but how about this proposal: Fuentes to the Braves for Tyler Yates, Will Ohman and B. Pena. The Rockies get 2 guys to help there pen NOW and a good accessory player that can also help. I can see Soriano in the 9th, Fuentes in the 8th, Moylan and Acosta in the 7th, keep Bennett as long relief, and keep Boyer and the better of the 2 lefties or Resop as the last man. This pen would be powerful and deep and would get even better when Gonzo returns. If we are not giving enough, then take out Pena, and throw in Dan Smith or heck throw him in anyway… Thoughts? .
The progressive forces in Scottish politics must come together ...
THREE DAYS after Scotland's historic election, there is much we do not yet know. It remains uncertain who will form the Executive, who will be first minister andwhat deals will be donetoforma government. But we can be sure of this: our country will never be the same again. Political cliché or not, the tectonic plates have shifted irrevocably. This newspaper believes that is a good thing. We argued last week that an SNP-led coalition with the Liberal Democrats was the best possible outcome of the election. Scotland needs change to accelerate our rate of progress and Labour needs a period in opposition to rediscover its sense of purpose and direction. The election result represents a triumph of hope over fear, however slim; a welcome reminder that scare tactics such as those employed by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown can often have the opposite effect to that intended if they seek to undermine self-confidence; and an inspiring two fingers to tabloid newspapers (and yes, we mean The Daily Record and the Scottish editions of The Sun and the Daily Mail) whose attempts to terrify the electorate into believing a vote for the SNP would spell the end of everything were as patronising as they were pathetic.
MSM Hound Won't Hunt!
The one that is the most problematic is (John) Edwards, who voted for the Patriot Act, campaigns against it. Voted for No Child Left Behind, campaigns against it. Voted for the China trade deal, campaigns against it. Voted for the Iraq war ... MyDD is temporarily stunned! ... 2:33 P.M. ______________________________ Thursday, January 17, 2008 'Bradley Effect' Update: Obama is ahead by 9 points over Hillary in the most recent Mason-Dixon poll of South Carolina voters. But can we trust voters to have told pollsters the truth--or are racial concerns (including the desire not to offend) leading them to give inaccurate answers? a) Black 'Bradley' Voters? Noam Scheiber weighs in again on the possiblity of such a "Bradley Effect" for black voters.

Morocco win bad news for Saints
Saints have missed Safri since he went away with Morocco and manager George Burley has repeatedly said how hard it is to find a midfield balance without him sat in front of the back four. Initially, Saints tried Jason Euell and Inigo Idiakez in those central midfield roles but then swapped with Euell partnering Jermaine Wright for the game at Plymouth. Either way, Safri has been sorely missed. .

The Political Junkie They Made Me Be
I used to listen to political talk radio on my way to work but the static was aggravating. I am not saying the station did not come in clear. I am talking about the noise of what was coming from the broadcaster's mouth. As soon as I arrive at school I run up to my room in order to put on my computer to see if one of the news channels heard something about something that was going to change the election. They say it happens all the time but the only thing their report changes is another news flash stating the first one was not as important as first thought. I even signed up for a CNN news pop-up that takes over my computer screen anytime one of those important reports comes in. For the past few months my students have asked why their work seems a bit confused. I tell them to blame the Republicans.
Remember that war over there? (Pssst, in Iraq)
Multiple fatality bombings decreased from 69 in January 2007 to 23 in December. Civilian casualties decreased from 3,700 in May of 2006 to 500 last November. The number of U.S. soldiers killed by Improvised Explosive Devices declined from 82 in May 2007 to 26 in November and 9 in December. But there have been 10 thus far in January. U.S. military deaths reached a high of 137 in December 2006 to 126 in June 2007, 38 in October, 36 in November, 23 in December, and back up to 27 this month thus far. Newly displaced Iraqi civilians were 90,000 in January 2007, compared to 40,000 in November. And the bad news? Internally displaced Iraqis rose from 200,000 in 2004 to 1.34 million in 2007. The estimated strength of foreign insurgents is still in the 800 to 2,000 range, largely unchanged.
