The real fact that Obama got more delegates out of the state went virtually unreported. Is this the media trying to make the news -- not report it?

Cemetery upkeep

It is beyond disrespect for a Revolutionary War hero, especially, or anyone else who has served and or died for this countryÊto be buried in a national cemetery thatÊreminds people of a potter's field.

Bring back the grass!

A national cemetery that looks like the one at Fort Bliss is a disgrace. We owe our freedom to many of the people buried in national cemeteries. They deserve a much better looking final resting place.

The GOP Will Have to Steal the Next Election Because They Cannot Win ...

The Republican party is losing its "business base" because it's on the wrong side of every issue that will decide the Presidency and the make up of congress. Those issues include the economy, the endless war, ballooning deficits and health care. A killer issue is a fact gaining traction even among the GOP: the GOP is bad for a good economy. I've got the stats to prove that beyond any reasonable doubt. Also spelling doom for the GOP is the fact that even hard-nose businessmen are "fed up" with GOP myopia, its fanatical obsession with so-called "social issues", primarily, abortion and gay marriage. These are not the "wedge issues" they used to be. People are just sick of hearing about it! Give it a frickin' rest. Focus On Social Issues. Countless businessmen I know tell me they are exhausted with the Republicans' focus on abortion, gay marriage, and the host of social issues the party insists on putting on the front burner.

Senate under pressure to approve stimulus deal to get tax rebates to workers in May Morning update

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - A much-anticipated deal between the White House and once-warring House leaders to speed tax rebate checks to workers starting in May has the Senate in a bind over whether to try to add to the measure.

Few public developments were expected Friday as lawmakers digest Thursday's announcement of a hard-won agreement between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Republican leader John Boehner and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that would pump about $150 billion into the economy this year and perhaps stave off the first recession since 2001.

The Senate very often wins its battles with the House. But now, with the power of the Bush administration behind them, House leaders are optimistic that their simply drawn measure - providing rebate checks to 117 million families and $50 billion in incentives for businesses to invest in new plants and equipment - would prevent the Senate from making significant changes such as extending unemployment benefits.

Truck fire on I-75

Last week, after a playoff game, I heard a radio talk show guy say there is no longer a need for teams to draft a running back in the first round. He used Green Bay's Ryan Grant as a case in point.

Grant was signed as a free agent from Notre Dame in 2005 by the Giants. He wound up with the Packers and rushed for 956 yards, averaging 5.1 yards a carry this season. That's good, considering he wasn't the Packers' featured back when this season started.

But in the NFC title game against the Giants, Grant wasn't a factor.

Now switch to the AFC title game, the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers. San Diego star LaDainian Tomlinson (1st round, 5th pick) removed himself from the game early because of injury, forcing Michael Turner (5th round) to start.

Bring on the old school sequels!

Meantime, Crash Davis has become a successful major league pitching coach and amateur electrician. Crash is widely lauded for successfully repairing malfunctioning light towers at Camden Yards before a playoff game. Annie Savoy split with Crash in 1991 after a three-year romance and now works as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports.

Larry Hockett, tired of the unpredictability of minor league coaching, returned to work at Sears, where he once again sells Lady Kenmores.

New rain, ice hamper storm recovery effort

Repair crews and homeowners still faced a mixture of snow, sleet and light rain that fell across parts of north Texas and central Oklahoma during the morning.

"It will still be cold and nasty outside and may slow efforts to restore power and remove tree limbs and such," said Patrick Burke, a weather service meteorologist in Norman, Oklahoma.

Sunshine was possible in hard-hit Oklahoma during the afternoon and temperatures could reach the 40s Thursday, the weather service said. By late Friday, however, another storm could bring 2 to 4 inches of snow to parts of the region.

Ice up to 1 inches thick has glazed much of the central Plains and Midwest this week. At least 27 deaths -- mostly traffic accidents -- have been blamed on the storm system since it developed last weekend.

Cookin’ up something special

Generosity gets around at about the same pace. Knowing the project wouldn't take shape overnight, an anonymous donor stepped in and purchased a van at an auction for $8,000. Needless to say, the plan to keep the project a secret from the Showers family didn't quite work out. "It was supposed to be a surprise, but we couldn't not tell them," Sellard said. When she learned of the project, Justin's mom, Deborah Showers, said she "was very pleased and surprised." "I had my doubts that they could accomplish this, but they seem to be doing a wonderful job," she added. Drew and Bobby were skeptical, too. Initially, they hoped to sell enough books to pay for the van and break even on printing costs. The first order of 500 books arrived the week after Christmas, and Bobby and Drew finally saw the product of nearly a year's worth of compiling and editing recipes.
