| Stay cool in a volatile market
IT'S been a terrible start to the year for super fund members. The sharemarket bears have taken a swipe at retirement nest eggs and stolen the financial- year-to-date returns for some members and even the entire 2007 earnings for others. And it's only January. But the experts aren't just spouting rhetoric when they say don't panic. Members have got time on their side, lots and lots of time – and four years of double-digit returns to fall back on. But, even for those who are not sweating, 2008 does look like being a difficult year for super trustees to make money for their members. Here are some tips to keep you on track: I will not be afraid to hold cash (and lots of it). It's not often that it happens, but every now and then holding large wads of excess cash in super can be a good idea.
New Tech fan blog: 'Shake and Bake' cooking up great future with ...
College athletics is a BIG business and we MUST spend a little money to make money. How foolish does UH look for their penny-pinching now? They may have saved a few thousand dollars in the short-term, but they've lost BIG in the long term. They've not only lost their coach, they've lost their national credibility. We can learn a lot from our friends on the island. The administration AND the fans need to step up if Louisiana Tech Athletics is to be nationally relevant.Jonathan Nida is a CHAMPS member and a season ticket holder. He contributes to the fan site bleedtechblue.com .
Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death
Teacher's contracts are for 180, six hour, days, in District 271. (Or at least that was what it was when my husband was here, it has probably been negotiated to less days and hours by now). After a year or two on the job, they make good money and benefits, in addition to the amenities of living in this area. How many in our county are paid $30.00 to $45.00 or more an hour, including benefits? A number of them are two teacher families, and have an RV and boat parked in their driveway. The IEA is a UNION! While, there are many dedicated, excellent teachers, a lot only look at the bottom line, and are able to hold our children hostage until they get more salary and benefits. Arpie: I just got out my December 06 pay stub so I could tell you what last year looked like. At age 48, having taught since 1981, my gross pay was a little less than $46,000 last year.
Ad campaign promotes money management
Benjamin Bankes might not be Super Bowl material this season, but I'd love to see him in prime time next year. You've probably never heard of Benjamin, but he has many fine attributes. He's a snappy dresser, a quick thinker and thrifty, and he seems to make all the right moves. He's also a pig. The Ad Council and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants created Benjamin as the centerpiece of a national television and radio public service advertising campaign that promotes sound money management habits. Benjamin is supposed to provoke memories of our piggy banks. Indeed, he encourages you to empty your pockets of spare change and dollar bills and "feed the pig." Benjamin has potential. While these ad spots may not win any major awards or generate much of a cool factor with kids, they do succeed in delivering a clear message: Young adults need to take control of their finances and build long-term financial security.

Reid Praises Limbaugh For Record EBay Letter Sale
Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is no fan of Rush Limbaugh, but the Nevada Democrat praised the conservative radio talk-show host on the Senate floor Friday for raising more than $2 million for charity â€" by auctioning on eBay a letter in which Reid condemns Limbaugh. "I think it's really good that this money on eBay is going to be raised for this purpose," Reid said. "Everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life, and maybe that is kind of an understatement. "But without qualification Mark Mays, the owner of the [Clear Channel Communications] network … [and] Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause." Limbaugh has pledged to donate the auction proceeds to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides financial assistance to the children of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers.
