| Brit Off to a Mental Hospital?
Sources tell TMZ the "responsible" people in Britney's life are trying to convince her to voluntarily enter a mental hospital. We're told there's now a consensus -- she'll never get custody of her kids unless she undergoes intensive, in-patient treatment for what appears to be a severe bipolar disorder. But we're told Spears is resisting and does not want to enter a hospital. And sources say that since her release from Cedars, Brit has "pulled it together, at least on the surface." She is coherent and engaged, but will not voluntarily enter a mental facility -- at least for now. .
N.Y. volunteers to S. Carolina for Obama
Though Eastover was dotted with Hillary Clinton signs, and no Obama signs, most of the people the team talked to were backing Obama. "Can he really win?" is the question they are most frequently asked. They estimate that for every 13 people they talk to from their list of voters, only one will actually vote, and they were trying to change that with flyers, gentle persuasion and shoe leather. Walent and Figura arrived planning to sleep on the floor of a church, but the Obama campaign found them a retired bus driver who opened her house about 45 minutes away from Columbia. "She's very maternal," Walent said. "She doesn't have a car and doesn't get out much. I think she's pretty lonely. She spent all day making us a big pile of ribs and corn bread and cabbage, but she made us eat the greens first." hkennedy@nydailynews.com .
Peru, Canada Sign Free Trade Agreement
LIMA, Peru — Peru has signed a free trade agreement with Canada, President Alan Garcia announced on Saturday. The two nations' foreign ministers struck the deal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Garcia told Radioprogramas radio. The pact must be approved by both countries' legislatures. "This is great news because it guarantees growth, guarantees Canadian investment in Peru and guarantees that we will have new spaces to grow in 2008," Garcia said. The deal could boost Peruvian exports of wood, furniture, mineral, natural gas and agricultural products to Canada, he added. Peru is the second nation in South America to sign a free trade agreement with Canada, joining Chile, which struck an accord in 1997. Peru also began a first round of trade talks with China this week.

Pampered Clemens just doesn't seem to get it
I'm sick of Roger Clemens. I'm sick of people who think like him. I'm sick of people who think it's OK to think like him and I'm sick of people who make excuses for him. This has absolutely nothing to do with whether he did or did not use steroids, HGH or Preparation H. It has everything to do with the way he has reacted to being accused of it. He had a rare opportunity this week. Not once, but twice, he was given a forum to garner some sympathy and perhaps a little of that benefit of the doubt to which he believes he is entitled. Twice, he was given large, priceless swaths of TV time to tell his side of the story. Each time, he came off looking worse than the time before. .
Writers to Rub Out Grammys?
We will take whatever action is necessary to ensure that a program so vital to our industry, artists, charitable beneficiaries, and the great city of Los Angeles is held as planned. Accordingly, all preparations by th Academy for our milestone 50th Annual Grammy Awards remain in full-swing." While the Grammys seem to be striking the wrong chord with the WGA, the NAACP Image Awards are getting a flyer. The WGA announced Tuesday it had granted a waiver to organizers of the 39th annual awardscast, which honors people of color in film, TV, music and literature. The WGA has granted similar waivers to the the SAG Awards and Independent Spirit Awards. That's good news for such nominees as Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Will Smith, America Ferrera, Taye Diggs and Jordin Sparks, all of whom are free to attend the Feb.
