Don't cheer smoking ban; you may be next target

I want to add my opinion to the two letters published on Jan. 11 from Mike Lynch (``Stop bureaucrats from making decisions for us'') and Brian Thomas (``Don't let our government `protect' away freedom'').We are becoming a police country. Like Brian said, first it was seat belts, now a total smoking ban. I think the total ban went too far.Smoking is still legal. If the government wants to protect us from ourselves why not make smoking illegal? No, they won't do it because too much revenue is generated from cigarettes. What saddens me is to go to the VFW and watch our veterans who fought and died for the freedoms we used to enjoy, standing outside smoking at their private club.smoking police better wake up. One of your freedoms may be next and, believe, me you won't like it and there won't be anything you can do about it.Carol SylvesterBloomington .

NHL 2K7 Xbox 360 Hockey Review

Last year when the Xbox 360 launched Hockey, fans got the short end of the stick. 2K Sports decided to port over their 2K6 with a few polishes but it was nowhere up to par of a real Xbox 360 game could be. It was decent but with only 5 achievements, it just seemed rushed. Even with decent reviews the flaws were pointed out. This year 2K Sports has brought out the deepest NHL game to date. Read the full NHL 2K7 review to see why this is simply the game for the die-hard Hockey fans.

The 2K series already had options that gave players options like crashing the net, coaching on the fly and a more realistic game play style. While a little complicated to learn everything, the amount of option made it the clear winner among gamers that wanted a pure NHL experience. Visual Concepts went back and revamped the presentation on and off the ice.

Rating the presidential candidates' values of freedom

Paul also allowed his name to be used on newsletters in the early 1990s that included questionable rhetoric about blacks and gays. He didn’t write them, and he’s no bigot, but he could have exercised better control. He has been right from the beginning, however, on the most important issue of recent times, the ill-advised war in Iraq. Despite considerable abuse from other GOP candidates, he has not backed down on this key issue. He combines it with a thoroughgoing critique of U.S. foreign policy, making the case for a strong defense of the U.S. itself and a policy of nonintervention in the affairs of other countries, combined with free and open trade. During his time in Congress, Dr. Paul promised not to vote for legislation or spending that, in his view, violated the U.S. Constitution.

Firefighting fee condemned as 'new tax'

As far as some conservatives and taxpayer watchdogs in San Diego and Riverside counties are concerned, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger crossed the line Thursday when he proposed a 1.25 percent fee on home and business owners' insurance premiums to fund firefighting efforts."They can play the semantics game all they want," said Scott Barnett, a former Del Mar councilman and president of TaxpayersAdvocate.org. "But the governor should stop playing games. He is clearly reneging on his pledge not to raise taxes."

Barnett was echoed by a Riverside County supervisor.

"Why don't we call it what it truly is? It's a tax," said Supervisor Jeff Stone. At the same time, longtime critics of San Diego County fire protection programs welcomed the proposal as a way to boost the region's firefighters and their tools, after they were overwhelmed by the October wildfires.

Three Giants miss Friday practice with illness

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants starting fullback Madison Hedgecock and two others missed practice Friday because of illness.

Rookie safety Michael Johnson and defensive tackle Manny Wright also missed the team's next-to-last workout before leaving Monday for the Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

"They all have whatever is going around, the high temperature and that kind of thing," coach Tom Coughlin said.

Starting left guard Rich Seubert (knee) and backup cornerback Kevin Dockery (hip) missed their second straight day of practice with injuries.

Seubert sprained his right knee in the NFC title game in Green Bay on Sunday, but has vowed to play.

Dockery has been sidelined the last two playoffs games after aggravating a hip flexor injury in the wild-card win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
