Out with the old: Company helps consumers get rid of electronics

The company's NextPhase division contracts with businesses from down the street to across the globe to recycle or reuse electronic components. Chris Adam of NextPhase said they realized average people also needed a way to toss outdated electronics.

NextPhase, which oversaw the Oct. 13 recycling event, was inundated with equipment. Adam said they initially signed up seven company volunteers but "called out the cavalry."

"It was a lot of work, for sure," he said.

The 12 Converge employee volunteers filled three 53-foot tractor-trailers with 500 monitors, 425 desktop and laptop computers, 189 printers, and 700 other gadgets.

"The response was tremendous," Adam said of the event. "It demonstrated that there is a need in the community."

Converge advertised the event by what Romanowski dubbed a grass-roots effort: e-mail to nearby human resources departments, outreach to local communities, and listings in North Shore newspapers and local cable access channels.

Thinking of spring training, Francoeur’s future

Apparently A's general manager Billy Beane didn't get the memo about taking some time off during the last few weeks, traditionally the slowest time in the baseball industry. Oakland's GM did a little late wheeling and dealing while most others were traveling, kicking back, looking over recently tweaked rosters and determining what needs to be done between the holidays and opening day.)

I wouldn't say I'm entirely ready to pack up and head to Dark Star (Disney) for six weeks of spring training, but I'm at least starting to think about it. Still got plenty of movies and college hoops to watch between now and Feb. 14, reporting day for pitchers & catchers — and ink-stained members of the Fourth Estate.

By the way, for those wondering about who's gonna be at FanFest next weekend (Jan.

I'm Not Offended, I'm Just Bored: Why Gaming Journalism Should Stop ...

Women may play as many games as men, but the problem isn't with games here, it's with gaming journalism, and men are still the primary consumer. Check the comments section in Kotaku if you want. A closer comparison might be the auto industry. Both women and men buy cars, but when it comes to auto enthusiasts, most are male. That's why you still see barely-clothed models slathered all over cars at auto shows and on magazine covers.

I don't like it either, but I can't blame gaming journalism for pandering to the audience of gaming journalism, not games in general.

Unlikely Holyrood alliance helps SNP squeeze home in budget vote

THE Scottish Government's historic first budget passed its initial parliamentary test last night – thanks to the co-operation of an unlikely alliance of Tories, Greens and Margo MacDonald. In a knife-edge vote after a four-hour debate, the government won by 64 votes to 62, with the two Green MSPs abstaining. All 47 SNP MSPs supported the budget, backed by the 16 Tories and Ms MacDonald, the independent who represents the Lothians. However, in order to secure their support, John Swinney, the finance secretary, had to make a series of concessions. He promised the Conservatives that he would look again at finding more money for extra police officers and at accelerating the introduction of a promised business-rate cut.To assuage the Greens, he said the Scottish Government would in future insist on a "carbon" assessment of the next spending review and repeated it would not continue the £6 million fund to set up new airline routes to and from Scotland.Mr Swinney also pledged to give more money to Edinburgh council to recognise the city's status as the capital, one of Ms MacDonald's key demands. After a day of tension at Holyrood, the final vote saw Labour and the Lib Dems round on the Conservatives and their leader, Annabel Goldie, for supporting the SNP administration.Tavish Scott, the Lib Dem finance spokesman, said: "The Tories deserve nothing but derision for having sold their votes to the SNP for a half-baked promise.

Both spoke Saturday during a meeting of 2nd District party activists. The event was part of the GOP's annual Kansas Day convention. Ryun avoided mentioning Jenkins. He said he wants to return to Congress to work on the same issues he did when he was there, including reducing taxes and protecting small businesses. "This race is not about me. It's about you," he said. "It's been an enormous honor to represent you, and it would be a great honor to do that again." Like Ryun, Jenkins stressed her desire to win back the seat from Boyda. "Jim Ryun's a great guy, but he had his chance," Jenkins said after speaking to the same group. "It's time for fresh, new Republican leadership, and I'm stepping up." Of course, unity wasn't forgotten. Rep. Todd Tiahrt, who represents the 4th District of south-central Kansas, told the 2nd District Republicans that however the contest turns out, "You have got to come together." "We've got to remind the rest of the country that Kansas is a Republican state," he said.
